Getting started on the journey to building your own home can be confusing, and there are so many things to consider before you even break ground. We have put together our list of tips to help you start the journey towards your dream home.

For many of our clients, this is the first time they have undertaken a build and one of the most common things we hear is – we just have no idea where to start! Getting started on the journey to building your own home can be confusing, and there are so many things to consider before you even break ground. We have put together our list of tips to help you start the journey towards your dream home.

For the sake of clarity, let’s assume you already have your dream location ready to be built on (but if you don’t, check out our guide to finding the perfect block to build here). Next up is the all-important step of deciding on a builder to bring your visions to reality. But before that, you’ll want to make sure you have a few things in place.

The Vision:

A clear understanding of what you want to achieve is one of the best things you can arm yourself with at this stage. If you don’t yet have this pinned down, it’s time to start scouring for inspiration. Build up your Pinterest board, or Instagram albums, and make sure to note down what you like about each image. From here, you can start the process of editing down your inspiration and looking for common themes to help narrow down your vision. Take some time to really envisage what your new home will look like and how it will feel and flow.

The Brief:

Once you are across your vision for the project, start putting your ideas into a basic brief. This can include things like how you live, must-have inclusions, what works and doesn’t work for you in your current home, how many bedrooms, bathrooms and living rooms you need, what kind of activities your family enjoys and needs space or storage for, and any other important information about your lifestyle and your family.

The Budget:

The topic of budget can be a sensitive one, but really, it is one of the core necessities of planning your new home build. Everyone has a budget, no matter how large or small, and taking the time to consider and plan yours out is time well spent. Creating a contingency fund for unexpected costs is always a good idea and try to be realistic about your capabilities.

Once you have these things in place, you are ready to start the process of finding someone to design and build your dream home!
